About

Dean Hsieh was born in Taiwan and his family immigrated to the United States when he was a young boy. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with Fine Arts and Japanese degrees. He has worn many hats throughout his artistic career: print and web designer, computer animator, and comic book writer/illustrator. Some highlights include:

  • Writer/Artist of Devil’s Wake, a 60-page digital painted color comic published by DC/Zuda and Comixology
  • Writer/Artist of Athena, a 14-issue comic series collected into 2 graphic novel collections
  • Animator for A Scanner Darkly, a Time/Warner feature film based on Phillip K. Dick’s novel
  • Illustrator for the Austin Chronicle
  • Concept Artist for a proposed Metallica feature film project

He is passionate about using art as a communication tool for stories and ideas. He is equally inspired by history and culture as well as fantasy and science fiction. In his spare time he has played guitar in a number of bands. His original comic series Devil’s Wake won first place in the DC-sponsored Zuda comic online contest.
