Athena

It's 2047 A.D., and the new Greek gods are firing their Olympian predecessors right and left, "retiring" them to the human world. Athena, bitter and out of a job, now spends most of her time playing noisy music, drinking, and getting into barroom brawls. Follow her adventures in a futuristic dramedy of ancient gods and mere mortals.

Introduction

Athena was my first comic creation, released in November of '96 from my own self-publishing company A.M.Works. I literally threw in everything I liked into the mix, and what came out was a rather bizarre blend of Greek mythology, punk rock, romantic relationships, cyber-futurism, over-the-top action and super-goofy comedy. It wasn't the most focused comic in the world, but I had a lot of fun creating the outrageous places and characters that became the unique world of Athena.

I went through some major growing pains as a writer and an artist working on this series. I didn't really find my stride, I think, until the second half of the series. The second collection seems much more cohesive in both writing and art. However, I still have a nostalgic fondness for the awkward struggling look of the earlier issues. It was somewhat sad to end the series, since I had gotten to know the characters almost as if they were my friends in the three or so years that I've lived and breathed with them, through over fourteen issues. But, I think I gave them what all characters deserve: A proper ending. There's no better way to say goodbye to them than a satisfying conclusion.
