Dark Society

Two brothers caught in the dark underworld of Chinese triad gangs, growing up with nothing but each other and falling into a life of crime. There's only one way out, but the risk and sacrifice are high. Who will pay the price?

Introduction

Dark Society, a Chinese slang for the criminal underworld, is the title of an unfinished comic project about Chinese-American gangsters. In fact I began this project long ago, right after Athena ended, and it was an ambitious undertaking to create a cinematic graphic novel-length story with a visual style that would break away from my earlier works. I began to study screenwriting as a way of improving my writing skills, and found the format and structure of screenplays to be very helpful in developing stories. Being a big fan of American and Hong Kong gangster films, it was natural for me to begin writing Dark Society in screenplay form. Then, I did extensive research of Asian gangs and triads, as well as location study of San Francisco, in order to portray a dramatic story based on real facts and history of the triads.

The screenplay of Dark Society has been completed and several pages of comics from an earlier draft were finished. I hope to one day return to this project.
